Summer Goals 2019

This summer I wanted to accomplish two things; 1- Learn how to swim and 2- finally make a bathing suit that fits. I am proud to announce that I was able to accomplish both.

Me and my girls took swim classes at Splash Class Middle Georgia and for the first time  and I successfully made the bottom using the Whitney Bottom from Edgewater Ave  along with her YouTube channel.

When I first started sewing classes I remember making a bathing suit bottom. The cheeks part was all wrong and I could not get a perfect fit. Six years later I conquered my first bathing suit bottomed. Ii cut a medium and  large but I chose the large for a better fit.

The top is from Kommatia patterns that is no longer in print. I accidentally shortened the bodice to much so as quick fix I added a black accent.

The fabric I purchased from spandex world online but it is also no longer available. I bought a new print from fabric mart which you will see in my haul video next week.

I can't wait to make more for all the summer fun. What's your go to swimsuit pattern?

Dripping in Finesse!!! Bomber Jacket Edition Pattern Review McCall 7100

My first pattern review.  I see a lot but I have never actually reviewed a pattern. So here you go!

Pattern: McCalls 7100 with a twist (Bomber Jacket Action)

Fabric Used: Ankara fabric purchased at AKN fabrics and knit ribbing from Joanns

Pattern Sizing: I cut out a large based on my current measurements.

Did it look like the picture /drawing on the pattern envelope once you finished the project: Yes I got held up one part so I made a slight change.

What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern: I overal liked the pattern. It tested me so I enjoyed the process.

Pattern alterations or any changes you made: I didn't understand the pattern piece 9 and how to add that particular part so I used the ribbing all around the bottom instead of how it is pictured. (Since making the jacket I’ve done my research and my next one will be perfect)

Would you sew it again: YES!!! The next time
I will line it and I want to make one for my oldest.

See below  for more pics of the process and how I styled my jacket!

Edit- Since I wrote those post I have figured out Peice 9 and I am gearing up for my second bomber jacket during fall makes.

The photoshoot was super fun. My daughter Little Miss Jay was behind the lenses and even though it was a little overcast  I can't wait to do it again.

Don't forget to head over to my Instagram page at SewMeKrisB to see my moves in my jacket as well as Like Comment and Subscribe to my YouTube Channel at SewMeKrisB!!!

Fall/Winter 2017 Pattern Haul

GIRL!!! When McCall’s and Simplicity released their latest patterns I just knew I would be at the closest JoAnn’s store counting down the days until they arrive. I live in a small town and we have one JoAnns and what seems like a million sewist. So  I knew I had to be first in line.

The day came and patterns went on sale. I made sure I had a list and checked it twice, (low Key Christmas my world) and ran to the store. I was able to find some of the new Simplicity Patterns but McCall’s (which I really wanted) was just out of my grasp.

The weekend came and decided to try my luck. I called the JoAnns in the next town over and they had them. I drove 40 minutes and got every pattern I wanted from the McCalls Fall/Winter 2017.

Disclaimer: I own more patterns that I will ever sew in my life time but you can never have to many!

When buying patterns I tend to buy both sizes. I don't know why and most of the time I don't sew for other people (outside of skirts) but its something that I do. Plus, maybe one day I may need it.

So here is my haul. Even though  I know I wont sew everything before the end of the year here are a few things  I hope to make.

I am currently working on Mimi G Sew Sew Def Lexi Pattern but in addition I plan on making the following before the year is over.

McCalls7688- View E for Christmas

Simplicity 2061- View A to finish the look for my bomber jacket.

McCalls 7698 View B- Part of ThatsSewMonica and FeeSewCrafty November Sew-A-Long

Did you partake in the latest sale! What pattern would you like to see me make!?!

Seamstress Tag!!!!

Hey Everyone!
Surprise Surprise!!! You may have noticed that we have a new layout to the blog as well as a new logo. I've spent countless hours trying to produce a product that best describes me, so why not "pink" up the place. Let me know what you think about the rebrand, whether it is good or bad. I am very excited and I have so much in store but here is where my head is...
I can’t talk about the goals I have for this blog. It seems as though the more I talk about it, the less likely they are willing to happen. So I am just going to go for it. Just write, publish, repeat. I won’t say how often I want to post and what exactly I will post about. I will just get it done, and in a year from now all goals will be accomplished and we can toast to the good life.
As part of the rebrand I decided to reintroduce myself with  the Seamstress Tag. I even brought a friend along to tag so we can learn more about her and her amazing blog.
So here we go!
1.) Who are you?
Hi! I’m Kris!!! I’m a wife, a mom, a sister, daughter, and friend. I’m a Sewist and Owner of Jada Olivia. A clothing line specializing in African/Ankara skirts. I am silly, sweet, petty, educated and in my own way FIERCE! I have decided to make the 3rd quarter of 2017 my best yet and so far I am soaring.
2) When & why did you start sewing?
I started sewing about five years ago. When I started a new management position and I found myself always catching colds and getting sick. My boss asked me if I took vitamins and that my stress level could be that factor why I keep getting sick. At that time, I didn’t want to start taking something so I picked up a hobby. I enrolled in sewing classes at my local community college and for 12 weeks I went to school one day a week and learned to sew. One of best decisions I have ever made.
3) What is your favorite or proudest make?
My proudest makes is my first jumper, McCall’s 6083. It was my first wearable piece and I wore it so much I lost it. LOL. And my dress for my entry into Pretty Girls Sew Rippin' Ain’t Easy sewing completion. I made McCall’s 6953, and the rules of the competition is to take the pattern and make it your own. I took a simple dress and put a zipper down the front and modified the back to show my whole back. I worked really hard and even took off work to get it done. I photographed the dress out our local park and that photo is now at my moms house and you would think it was a professional shot.
4) What is your most disastrous make?
My current bathing suit. I put two patterns together and the top did not work out. I didn’t buy enough fabric and I do not want to give up, so I’m going to order more fabric and try it again.
5) Where is your favorite place to go fabric shopping?
I currently live in a small town so all we have is Jo-Anns. I’m originally from South Florida so I always enjoyed going down to the fabric district downtown. In a few weeks you will  hear about my online fabric shopping trip :)
6) What is your most used pattern?
I have never used the same pattern twice. I always want to create something new and expand my craft.
7) Your most dreaded sewing task is…
Bias tape- I learned how to make my own in school but I think there was some type of disconnect in my brain. So I haven’t used it since. I do have a 2018 goal to accomplish this task.
8) And your favorite sewing task?
Right now I don’t have a favorite. I just sew. Since I have a skirt line I can make them with my eyes closed but I just enjoy the process.
9) What is your favorite ‘sewing entertainment’?
When I first started sewing, I would get anxiety so I listened to a calming station on Pandora. But now I watch the Hallmark channel movies while I sew or whatever book I’m listening to at the time.
10) Printed or PDF?
I just purchased my first PDF pattern so I will have to say "Printed."
11) What sewing machine do you use? I currently have a Brother SE425. I got it as a gift from my husband for my birthday.
12) Do you have any other hobbies? I listen to book and I love to read. Besides sewing, I do a lot of DIY and crafts. I also collect shot glasses from all the cites I travel to.
I’m tagging Allysee Jolie. Allyse has an amazing blog and YouTube channel and is such a talented seamstress. I look forward to working with her on so many other things but go on down to her blog at www.allysejolie.com
Well I hope you enjoyed getting to know more about me. Make sure you subscribe to my mailing list to learn more about upcoming projects and future giveaways.
See you soon.

The Confessions of a Procrastinating Craftaholic!!!!

Last year I was so excited about all the endless possibilities 2016 had to offer. I became a stay at home mom and I created a vision board full of pieces I wanted to make, social media genres I wanted to break into to, and places I wanted to travel to. It is now 2017 and I have yet to keep up with my blog, I am way to scary to think about "Going Live" much less become active on Periscope, and those pieces I was excited about making, mostly went undone.

With that being said... I did manage to start my business Jada Olivia! I make custom African skirts for the every day woman. I started at a local Sip and Shop and was pleased with my success. I think year to date I have sewn about 100 skirts, made amazing connections, and met some pretty amazing people. (I'm an extroverted introvert.)  I have also gone back to my obsession. I am a healthcare regulation buff and to supplement my income (I like to shop) I decided to go back into the work force. With that decision my baby took a back burner.

So now we are in 2017, I haven't sewn in the last quarter, except for a select few and I am starting to have that "I am not living to my potential" feeling. I look back at where I failed and decided to keep with my 2016 goals and just emphasize on those I was able to keep and put more work into those I did not even attempt. I may have to limit my time on Facebook (I see everything lol) and use those minutes to get my goals done., but I am ready for the challenge. I also noticed since I started my business, I haven't sewn anything for myself and with a couple trips I have planned this year I want to be able to say I made that and wear it well. I also want to expand my business. When clients ask me to make things I always shy away and say no. Not because I cannot, I actually took sewing classes and I'm pretty talented, but because fear is real and fear of failure is debilitating

I cannot say that 2016 was all a bust. I did manage to purchase home, travel, and make multiple woman feel beautiful. I stepped out on faith with our relocation and I must say this is the happiest I have been in a while. My children are flourishing and my marriage is pretty amazing....

So lets see what 2017 has for me... Join my journey and catch me live in the next few weeks!!!

New Year Blessings

A Girl With Vision

Every year I say I am going to do a vision board and then I look up and its October. So I started prepping my 2016 Vision Board towards the end of 2015 but now I see its February.

I wanted something that not only matched my new sewing room but also grew with me. I found a peg board on clearance at Bed Bath and Beyond and I used contact paper from Wal-Mart. Picked up a couple letters from Michaels and Voila!! Soon you will see this is the same paper I used on my craft table when I reveal my new sewing room. I then added my goals for 2016 along with my sewing aspirations.

(Sorry I forgot to take the pre-picture lol)

Some of the things I plan on accomplishing this year along with building the SewMeKrisB and Jada Olivia brands. Since I have so much free time now LOL, there will be more traveling and spending time with family.

Tell me about your Vision Board. .. post pics and tag me to them on IG @sewmekrisb I cant wait to see them...

Where has she been...

Hey Guys!!!

It's been so long since I have had the opportunity to blog much less do anything creative for myself. I have had several life changes, which has now given me the time to become a better blogger as well as evolve my brand.

Around late August early September my husband was offered a better position with his company just in a different city. So made the decision to take that midnight train to Georgia lol. He had to leave in early October, so the girls and I stayed back to get our affairs in order and sell our home. (Tears) I also had time to say good bye to our family, friends, and my beloved career.

We are now getting settled in our now colder city. This is no South Florida but I think this is an amazing opportunity for my family.

In the next few months expect more post from me and a little more dibbling and dabbling in different social media outlets.

I will post some decor from my new home as well some tutorials and patterns review.

I can honestly say I am very excited with everything I have in store for your guys.

Before we close out January I will post my vision board as well as how I achieved it. I think it came out amazing if I say so myself and it has room to change and grow.

Until next time...

Sewing Fun!

Sometimes in life, you just have to do it! This is also evident in sewing. I have been working on a simple peice for my show and for some reason it would not come out right. Thankfully, I was using Muslin so I wasn't actually wasting any fabric. Yet it was very frustrating, and just like writers block, sewing block can be very destructive to the creative process.

So I woke up one morning and decided today will be the day. I said my affirmations and thought about the process before getting out of bed (I'm a thinker) so I knew exactly what I was going to do. I used my show fabric, so I told myself there was no room for error and I sat in my room and did it.

By the end of the day I was a little tired but I had a finished piece and by God it felt great. Especially after I have had a few fails lately.

In the word of my dear friend Dori "Just keep swimming...."

(Sorry no pics... Check it out during my show on July 26)

Until next time

Where have you been?

 Hey Guys!

First things first... I would like to say Happy Memorial Day to the men and women who have lost their lives defending our freedom. Many of us will be cooking out  but please take a moment to pray for the families who won't be able to share this day with their loved one.

I realized that after the competition I put blogging on hold. Not because I meant to; I guess I was busy redirecting my focus. Being in the competition really pushed me and  reassured me that I can do anything that I put my mind to. Since then, I was blessed with the opportunity to put my passion into overdrive.

I have been in the beginning stages of my clothing line for some time. I started with "Jada Olivia" but it didn't pan out how I wanted so I created "Branton Girls". Those who know me, knows that anything I post that include me and my girls I include the hashtag #BrantonGirls. It is our brand and represents us. The phrase is even on my daughters wall as a constant reminder of who they represent.

The Branton Girls line is a mommy and me line. I love playing dress up and we tend to always dress a like. While I love to dress my girls a like I do keep in mind that they are two totally different  individuals with vast personalities and I honor that. The clothes will be age appropriate and range from toddlers to grown women. Developing this line will also be a legacy I can leave my girls. They too have designing rights and even thought they are not sewing at the moment; I do see classes in the near future. You never know; one day they may be dressing Blue Ivy or North West's daughters or even better Sasha and Malia Obama's kids ;)

So that's where all my time and hard work. Doing research, ensuring the look I want will be accomplished, all while being  a wife, mom and full time career driven woman.

With that being said, I was contacted by Go Pro Kids about being a designer in their launch party and fashion show. I got the notice while I was at work and when I tell you I almost fainted. LOL! I was so honored they chose me. So when I say someone is always watching. THEY ARE!!

Go Pro Kids is South Florida based magazine that showcases the many talented kids we have in our beautiful city. The creator like myself had a dream and went for it. Watching it span out motivates me like no other. My daughter also had the pleasure of being showcased in their first edition and I can't wait to see the write up. I want to thank them for giving me my shot! I am so excited and can't wait for July 26. When I tell you its going to be an amazing event... Don't believe me just watch!!!  Ticket information will be below.

Until next time... Follow me on Instagram at @sewmekrisb or the line at @BrantonGirls. In few weeks you will meet our Branton Girls who will be walking in our show

Kisses.

RAE: Round Two (Saying Good-Bye)

So I did not make it to Round 3 of Pretty Girls Sew: Rippin' Ain't Easy online sewing competition.  The night of submission, things weren't working in my favor.  I felt like my shirt did not fit how I wanted it to, the photos weren't coming right and I was overall stressing. Thank God for my supportive husband, who was right there telling me everything was beautiful even though I did not believe so.  The day of voting was just like round one; a  lot of support that I was grateful for and it kind of eased my apprehension.

Once again I did not sleep that Friday night (I think its a Friday night thing not waiting on votes thing) and right after I fell asleep; I got notice I did not make it. I said a prayer and thanked God for just giving me the opportunity to even make it to Round One and set forth with new goals.

Thanks to all my amazing friends and family who shared the post voted for me and cheered me on and good luck to the beautiful ladies who are still competing. A few of you, asked when I am going to make you something... stay tuned something is brewing.

Rippin Ain't Easy

Rippin' Ain't Easy

A few months ago I spoke about how I entered my first fashion show being held in Austin, TX and was waiting to see if I got in. Well..... I did!!! Woohoo!!!!! LOL!  But in all my excitement the powers that be didn't allow for it to take place. Instead I was given the opportunity to participate in Rippin' Ain't Easy, a online sewing competition.

Rippin' Ain't Easy is a online sewing competition put together by the amazing ladies of Pretty Girls Sew. You are given a pattern and have about two weeks to make it your own. You submit your looks and people vote for you on their site. I am truly honored to be selected amongst nine talented woman. I am a even more excited to push myself to the limit.

Update...

Well, I completed my first round.  When I tell you one week later I am still screaming. AAAAAAAHHHHHHH!!!!!! I am very proud of my self. I am not your average seamstress. I dont sew for a living and my fashion line has yet to be made. I sew as a stress releiver from my hectic job and even though I did take a class I often get nervous while sewing.

We were given McCalls Pattern M6953 and had to modify it. I knew I wanted to add a zipper but I also wanted it to be me, cute and sexy. So I decided to crop out the back also.  I purchased my fabric from Mood Fabric and when it came in it was not what I expected. I didn't understand that the fabric was panels and not whole piece. (Reading is Fundamental) So when it was time to finally cut out the pattern, I had to make sure it was to my liking.I kind of channeled Amal Cooney's wedding weekend dress. I honestly put my heart, soul, and first born into this dress and was soooo excited to see the final product.

The day before my dress was due, my girlfriend and I went to the area nature reserve to photograph my dress.  The timing was amazing and every shot came out beautifully. It was a fun evening in the sun.

After submitting my dress (pressing the send button was like a huge weight off my shoulder) it was time to vote. That morning I could not focus. I shared on Facebook, on Instagram and  even had my family, friends and even my mom texting everyone they knew. My family from Dominica was even voting for me. Yup, I'm international! I was so overwhelmed by the love I received. It brought years to my eyes.  I support everyone never expecting the receive the same amount of support I was given that day. I couldn't believe the love I felt.  The night of results I didn't sleep. I even had a dream I saw a giant tarantula in my bathroom (long story) and next morning when they made the announcement I couldn't believe it. I MADE IT (que Drake song)

I am in the middle of working on my second piece and I push myself everyday. I can't wait to show you. Just know its going to be my favorite color, LOL

Like always I will keep you updated.

Until next time.

Just a little Tease

Since I started sewing I found that the clothes I made didn't fit my body the way I wanted it to. I am a thin girl and after having two kids via cesarean I found I have a small pouch. To make matters worse I hate working out. I feel like I never have the time and even though I have a gym membership, getting up on a Saturday morning doesn't seem like my ideal plan. So when my good friend Taryn aka Coco told me that she teaches you a fun sexy dance through her company Tease, LLC. I was excited and nervous at the same time.

Disclaimer: I by no means find my self to be sexy. I'm pretty, cute, beautiful and everything in between but that sexy goddess thing really isn't me.

I arrived at the class and the set up was amazing. She had fruit, whipped cream, and most important yummy drinks (Shhh...I had a few pink panties.) Not to mention, the room was  dim and the ambiance from the black light made it ultra sexy.

After a drink or two, you start to feel a little comfortable so it's time to start class. Coco ensures it's a judge free zone.   From young girls to grown woman, I felt very comfortable with the woman who I in some cases I jut met five minutes ago. The diversity in women who attended also brought down my nervousness.

I attended the class the day before Valentine's Day and I wanted to learn a little something to show the hubby. We learned a dance to Beyonce's "Speecheless"

Overall I had an amazing time. I was so glad I came and he absolutely loved my little dance.

This is my sultry goddess friend CoCo

TeasetheABCs LLC. is an Adult Burlesque Dance Class encouraging and creating confidence and sensuality in women. Ankara Miami Fashion Week 2015

Yesterday I had the pleasure of supporting my very good friend as she ripped the run way for Ankara Miami Fashion Week 2015.

This years activities started on Thursday with a designer meet and great, followed my an emerging designer show on Friday. Saturday's show showcased the talents of Wamuiru Couture, Allusions by A.Lekay, Fabian & Mom, JZO and many more. Today (Sunday February 22, 2015) is a pop up shop hosted by Alessandra Gold. You can see more of the designers work on my Instagram page (@sewmekrisb)

While I could not attend every event. I did make it to the main event on Saturday. The fashion was amazing, the DJ kept the party going and the models were so hot they could have melted the runway. As I stated earlier, I came to support my friend so here are some of her fashions from last night show. Wamuiru Couture (@wamuirucouture) makes tailored and custom clothing. The designer gives you the option of choosing from custom pre-made pieces or have something designed specially for you. Contact her for your designer needs.

I must say, as an up and coming designer, attending these shows gives me so much inspiration. I left the show ready to conquer the fashion world. Maybe not today lol but one day!!!!

Until next time.....

Sewalutions!!!

I guess I just made up this word. It also maybe a little late to be talking about sewalutions but hey it's never to late get something started. With that being said, please don't put off until tomorrow LOL

My sewalutions are always the same; I want sew one thing a week. I want to blog on this and that on a weekly basis or I want to  finally get  my clutch line started, But the year ends and I don't have 52 pieces of clothing, I only manage to blog quarterly and lets just say I don't have to many clutches laying around my room. Then I feel like a failure.

The first part of this year I was on target. I made an outfit, a dress, I was on target for my show pieces and BAM!!!!! I got hit with sewing block. I didn't like my fabric I didn't like my patterns and  I didn't have any inspirations. Then the show got cancelled.  Just nothing was working out for me. Now it feels as though I got my sewjo back (I think I like making new words :)) I am working on my very first pattern review. I finally started my Instagram page (@sewmekrisb) and by reading this you can see I am blogging a little more.

Please follow my IG page @sewmekrisb. The page focuses on my day to day sewing adventures. We will soon be having a giveaway which I am very excited about.

See you next time

30

It In a few months I will be turning 30, and while I hear so many people dread it, I am actually looking forward to it. I feel like this is my time for all my dreams to come true. I got pregnant at 21, graduated college at 23, started my career at 24, got married at 26, had my second daughter at 27 and now at 29 I am more focused on finding self. I love my family and feel as though my 20s were just a dress rehearsal and now it's time to find my passion.

You already know I took a sewing class, and yes I do make my stuff when I have time. But everytime someone says... Girl make me one!?! I get freaked out!! Like really!?! I was playing. Yes, I took a class but I learned how to sew for me. I even thought I wanted a clothing line but got scared.

I follow this amazing group of ladies called "Pretty Girls Sew" when I tell you they are doing their thing. They must be mini Beyonces because they must have additional hours in their day that I still can't find.

In June of 2015 they are hosting their Sewcial and I thought it was a cute idea. A couple days in Austin with likeminded individuals. Then they announced "Seams and Sashay Fashion Show" and when I read the requirements, I automatically shot myself down. Then I thought about it. I am capable. I have to come up with four looks which I have already chosen. I sent in my inquiry email and I am waiting to hear back.

I will keep everyone posted.

Talk to you later

My Sewtuary!

My sewing room is amazing. I don't think I could have design a better sewing room for myself. It's femine, efficient and most of all it's.. PINK! Pink is my ultimate favorite color and I think when I die want to buried in an pink coffin (extreme but yeah it's me)

I made my craft table myself using two book cases from Walmart and a table top from Ikea. Pre measuring truly matters, as my first table top was to small so I had to take an extra trip to ikea :-)

My desk also came from ikea and my husband put it together for me. The dressform was a gift from my sister in law and I adorned it with a beautiful Chanel sewing charm bracelet. My first machine ever and my serger are gifts from a few of biggest supporters--my mom and god mother.

My ironing board went so well with my area rug you would think I made it. But it was a lucky find at Ross.

Last but not leats my "Jada Olivia" sign. Jada Olivia is my daughters names and the name of my future clothing line (God is working on the perfect timing) I made this sign huge because one day this name will be plastered everywhere.

Since I get so nervous while sewing, I created such an oasis that is kind of calming and perfectly me!

Tell me about your sewing oasis.. Do you use your dining room table as a cutting table or your actual sewing center. How do you create your sewing mood. I would love to hear from you.

Blogging

I don't think I ever took into consideration the amount of time it takes to maintain a blog.  I guess being a mom, wife and having a full time career (that I love) I didn't think I wouldn't have so much time for anything else that I love.

There are multiple blogs that I follow, and when there is a new post I get all excited and gitty inside (lame, I know :)), But that's how I want my readers to feel.  I want to be able to relate to my readers. I want to inspire my readers to do better, go farther and reach new heights. I'm not a professional seamstress with her own line who can sew anything with her eyes closed. I'm learning... I took classes and now its time to put it work. I have made several pieces that I will never wear but that's life. We try...we fail and what matters the most is that we try again. Like I tell me daughter practice makes perfect.....

So let's practice! I will work on my sewing and maintaining my blog and you can "practice" reading it on a regular basis lol. I will have giveaways and even take topics from my readers. If your a beginner this may just be the blog for you.
